Loreto participated in the Middle Schools’ Chess Tournament, held at Caleta Hotel on Thursday 15th March. Four Loreto teams competed against teams from all other middle schools and as always, performed wonderfully.
Special mention must be made of Pablo Kussner Nunez, who played on board A1 and won all of his matches, beating some of the best junior chess players in Gibraltar. The tournament organisers singled him out as a talented player with a lot of potential in chess. Many congratulations to all in the A team – Pablo, Douglas Craig, William Haynes, Nicolas Darling, Jasmine Bateman and Charlotte Scott.
Another player worth singling out is Paolo Azzarelli, playing on board B4 who won 4.5 of his 5 matches. Paolo only starting playing chess a few months ago and is showing real promise in this game! Well done to Paolo and the rest of the B team – Carlos Chacon Perez, Zach Hamilton, Alejandro Pacheco, Bosco Darling and Charlie Hill.
Adriana Garcia Martinez won her 5 matches playing on board C1, helping her team to take runner’s up spot in the ‘B’ tournament. A fabulous performance by Adriana and the rest of the C team – Pablo Herrera, Harrison Thomson, Cesar Quintanilla Sanchez, Victor Bering and Gema Martinez Corrales. Congratulations on a job well done!
Ivan Pacheco, playing in the development team, also deserves a special mention for a great performance on the day. He, and the rest of the development team, gained valuable experience today. Well done to all – Sophia Elliott, Sophia Shacaluga, Alvaro Mendieta, Patrick Schaewel, Candela Cabello Saez and Timothy Salmon.
A huge thank you to Mrs Garner for her dedicated work with the chess club.
