Last week saw both our First and Middle School choirs and a recorder ensemble participate in the Gibraltar Festival for Young Musicians (GFYM). On Thursday 22nd February the choirs and ensemble performed at the John Mackintosh Hall, competing against other local schools.
The First School choir sang beautifully, the adjudicator said their performance was exciting, with good choral discipline and very competent soloists. They came second, receiving a “Commended” grade and 86 points.
The recorder ensemble also did very well, earning a second place with a “Commended” grade and 86 points. The adjudicator praised the ensemble for their good sound and ensemble discipline.
The Middle School choir excelled in both their performances. The adjudicator commented on their engaging interpretation, their well-disciplined performance as well as very good control of pitch and rhythm. He also commended the soloists for their good vocal performances.
They earnt their place as one of the three choirs competing in the Gala concert for the title of ‘Best School Choir’ together with St. Paul’s and St. Joseph’s First School choirs.
Saturday evening saw the three choirs compete followed by a very nerve racking 2 hour wait backstage. The adjudicator finally deliberated and Loreto Convent was announced winner of the Erin Valverde trophy and bursary for ‘Best School Choir’ in the GFYM 2018.
Well done to all the children, the staff in the Music Department and the parents for all their support with both choirs and the instrumental ensemble.
