The traditional ceremony of thanksgiving and appeal for continued protection was held at Loreto Convent for First and Middle school pupils. This was the celebration of the archangles St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael. The children were told of the story by year 7 pupils, explaining that in Loreto Convent there are special reasons for thanking the angles who protected one of our Convents many years ago. Long ago, the Loreto Convent in York was attacked by armed men who were determined to destroy it. One of the nuns ordered the picture of St. Michael to be hung over the door, and taking the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle she and the other nuns knelt in the passage leading to the front door. She then called on her Lord; ‘Great God save us, for we cannot save ourselves!’ Suddenly dead silence fell on the men outside and those who were going to attack the convent began to move away.
