On Tuesday16th April we launched our ‘Future Loreto’ fundraising appeal with a reception held in the iconic Palm Tree Courtyard. His Excellency the Governor, Sir David Steel, who has agreed to become the project’s patron, was the guest of honour. The head and deputy head boys and girls presented him with a beautiful watercolour of Loreto by Michelle Stagnetto, as well as a Loreto School tie to seal the Loreto connection!
Richard Garcia, a member of the Board of Governors and an ex-pupil, gave a short speech summarising the history of the Loreto nuns‘ presence in Gibraltar and highlighted their key role in educating girls, and eventually also boys, over the last 180 years. Mr Maurice Stagnetto, a member of the school Board of Governors, also said a few words, explaining the need to take care of the building which the school has occupied for so many years, and which is now in need of some urgent, and expensive, TLC.
The guests were treated to music from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band and beautiful singing by Andrea Simpson while they enjoyed drinks and canapés in the evening sunshine. All agreed that ‘Future Loreto’ and Loreto’s future journey in Gibraltar’s education had got off to a great start!
