In the first Inter-School competition of the year, Loreto entered a Year 4/5 team and a Year 6/7 team. The teams consisted of a mix of talented boys and girls, who were very keen to bring home some silverware.
The Year 4/5 team played some great rugby showing speed, agility, team work and some superb tagging in defence. Captain Sam Sheriff was always vocal throughout and helped guide his team into the final against St Joseph’s. After a 5-5 draw in the final, the game went down to a “golden try” which St Joseph’s scored. If Loreto had won the coin toss, it may have been a different story. However, well done to our Year 4/5 team, who played some very good rugby, which was praised by all and although they were disappointed with the end result, they were very gracious in defeat.
The Year 6/7 team impressed throughout the competition. Creative in attack as well as organised in defence, this allowed the team to score over 45 tries and concede only 13 throughout the whole competition. Captain Jack Tunbridge organised his team very well, always leading the attack and pushing up the defence. Loreto eased into their final, with all members of the squad of 12 making key contributions in each game. In the final, they came up against a competitive St Anne’s, but Loreto were determined not to let the opportunity slip, as had happened in last years final. We went on to put in a very convincing performance, with Loreto eventually winning 11-3 and claim the first inter school trophy of the year!
At the end, after claiming our winners and runners-up trophies, there were individual awards given to the best player in each team. Sam Sheriff won ‘Best Player’ for the Year 4/5 Loreto team and Juan Dominguez Perez won ‘Best Player’ for the Year 6/7 Loreto Team.
Congratulations to every player, hard work does pay off!
